In August 2013, South African Tourism, in collaboration with South African Airways USA and Marine Dynamics, wanted to create an engaging and immersive online experience to promote shark diving in South Africa. The campaign was designed to captivate and attract adventure seekers from around the globe to explore South Africa’s rich marine life.

We developed Shark Friendzy, an HTML5 Facebook application that provided users with a thrilling 3D virtual shark diving experience that brings the excitement of shark diving to life.

Features:

  • 3D Ocean and Marine Life: Custom-designed 3D ocean environment with lifelike sharks, fish, and diving cages to replicate the real diving experience.
  • Interactive Diving Experience: Users could dive into the ocean virtually and come face-to-face with a great white shark in an interactive shark cage.
  • HTML5 Integration: The app was built using HTML5, ensuring compatibility across various devices and providing a smooth, high-quality experience.
  • Social Media Integration: The application was embedded within the Visit South Africa Facebook Page, making it easy to share and engage with friends and followers.
  • Sweepstakes Entry: Users who participated in the virtual dive were entered into a sweepstakes, increasing engagement and excitement.
Result

The Shark Friendzy campaign was a massive success, reaching over 7 million people and attracting 2,653 entries into the sweepstakes. The app generated widespread buzz, being featured in numerous online publications, including Travel Pulse, Luxury Travel Advisor, and Sherman's Travel Blog.

The campaign effectively showcased the excitement of shark diving and significantly boosted awareness of South Africa as a premier adventure tourism destination.
